CHORAL SYMPOSIUM:
Sat., May 15, 2010. 10 am - 3 pm
at Skinner Hall of Music, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY

Cappella Festiva is pleased to present a Choral Symposium honoring the tremendous talents of founder Jameson Marvin, Luis Garcia-Renart and James Bagwell.

In one exciting day, join with other musicians, teachers, and choral music lovers to learn from these accomplished and inspiring musicians, all of whom gave their talents and efforts to present outstanding music at the highest quality while furthering the life of this important arts organization. there will be a question and answer period in each session.

10:00 am: – James Bagwell
Creative Programming for Challenging Times: every arts organization has been affected by the current financial situation. James bagwell will discuss creative programming ideas within the limitations of the current economy. He will address both large and small works, and instrumentation. He will also discuss the importance of commissioning and working with composers.

11:30 am: – Luis Garcia-Renart
On the Podium: the longest serving conductor of Cappella Festiva will look back over his career and discuss the successes and challenges of directing this community organization while maintaining a vibrant, professional career. Luis Garcia-renart directed Cappella Festiva for over 20 years; during that time, the ensemble enjoyed a long period of growth with repertoire expanding from an emphasis on bach to include a wide range of music including baroque, Classical, romantic and Modern.

2:00 pm: – Jameson Marvin
The Expressive Power of Intervals: this discussion seeks to illustrate the Expressive Power of Intervals, by learning to rehear them. in choral music, the text inspires composers to choose specific intervals to reflect the emotion of a word or the general mood/affect of the text. Intervals (melodic & harmonic) express various shades of moods emotions: sadness, joy, anger, grief, elation, melancholy, triumph, love. understanding the inherent emotional affect of intervals directly affects choral-ensemble tuning, balance, rhythm, tempo rubato, dynamics, phrasing, articulation: the foundation for projecting informed, communicative, inspired performance. a small-ensemble will be present to demonstrate during the workshop

We would like to thank the Vassar College Music department for their generous support of the Choral Symposium.

The Symposium is free to all participants who register in advance by May, 1, 2010.  There will be a modest $10 charge at the door of unregistered participants, which will benefit the Cappella Festiva Scholarship Fund.
