(Luke 2:8–11, 13–14) 8 And there were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. . . 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will toward men.

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan;
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen,
snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.
Angels and Archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and Seraphim
Thronged the air;
But only His Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a Shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

Caldwell and Ivory's “Hope for Resolution: A Song for Mandela and DeKlerk”
Composer Sean Ivory wrote, “Paul and I wrote ‘Hope’ in 1994 to commemorate the end of Apartheid and the beginning of reconciliation in South Africa. It is dedicated to the memory of Nelson Mandela, who struggled long and hard against inequality and strove for meaningful dialogue between the races." The score honors two men Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk and their reconciliation work.
In this performance at Vassar College, the Treble Choir (middle school and high school youth) sing an English Christmas carol in their gentle, sweet voices. Then the Vassar College choirs and Cappella Festiva fold in with the South African anti-apartheid liberation song Thula Sizwe (in Zulu). Both songs weave together as one, in hope for resolution, no longer separated by race or class.
